Kwale Governor Achani stops sale of historic 18-acre Kongo Mosque land

The 18-acre land surrounding the mosque had been fraudulently claimed by two individuals who illegally obtained title deeds and attempted to sell it.

Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani has stopped the illegal sale of land on which the historic Kongo Mosque is built, a move hailed by conservationists and religious leaders.

The mosque, dating back to the 14th century, is a key cultural landmark. It is now facing land-grabbing threats, with 'for sale’ advertisements being placed in newspapers.

The 18-acre land surrounding the mosque had been fraudulently claimed by two individuals who illegally obtained title deeds and attempted to sell it. In response, the Kwale County government swiftly imposed restrictions (caveats) to prevent any unlawful transactions.

Governor Achani, speaking during the launch of a street lighting project at Kongo Mosque, reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to protecting the land and preserving the county’s heritage.

"We have put measures in place to stop these individuals from taking over this land, and with the support of various government agencies, we are confident in reclaiming it," she said.

The Kwale County government has officially written to the National Land Commission (NLC) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), urging them to revoke the fraudulent title deeds.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has also stepped in to assist in stopping the illegal transactions.

Governor Achani commended the agencies for their support in curbing land grabbing in Kwale County.

"I appreciate the backing from the EACC and other agencies that have shown a keen interest in ensuring that this land remains in the hands of the community," she said.

This intervention is part of broader efforts by the county government to recover illegally acquired land.

Working with the EACC, Achani’s administration has successfully reclaimed several parcels, including Kisite Mpunguti, Chale Island, two plots in Diani, and more land in Lungalunga Sub-County.

Kwale County Attorney Salim Gombeni also urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious land dealings.

"Land matters are taken very seriously in this county, and our priority remains the recovery of all illegally acquired lands," Salim said.

As efforts to safeguard the Kongo Mosque’s land continue, Governor Achani assured residents that her administration will remain firm in reclaiming all community land unlawfully taken.
